The vegetable garden has changed quite a bit since my earlier post. As you can see everything has grown and it is much greener now.
Originally we wanted to avoid laying fabric in the garden, but it sure makes weeding a whole lot easier! I just don’t understand how those weeds grow 5x faster than the rest of the plants! Simple amazing, and completely annoying!
We ran a fence along one of the rows in an attempt to cut costs on cages. We have tied the plants loosely to the fence and plan to add more ties as they grow. For the other row, we have used the heaviest gage tomato cages we could find. We have hard clay soil at our house and it is such a pain to get the cages into the ground. We ended up using the grinder to cut the prongs on the bottom of the cage to about 4 inches. This is short enough that we can push the prongs completely into the ground yet they still seem sturdy. We will stake the cages if necessary as the plants grow.
Our peppers are growing so well. All of the varieties are producing peppers already. I can’t wait until it is time to harvest!
All of the vine plants a growing quickly. As you can see we have A LOT of weeding to do. Once this has been fully weeded, we will be running fabric in this area too. It isn’t the most beautiful feature, but it saves us hours of work.
This is just a bit of what we have growing and I hope to post about each crop as the summer continues!
