We started the year by planting mammoth sunflowers. Most of them did come up which was a surprise itself. I figured that the birds would eat quite a few of the seeds before they had a chance to germinate.

The plants in the front of the picture are tomato plants. VERY LARGE tomato plants if that gives you an idea of just how tall these sunflowers are.

The weight of the flower quickly caused it to fall over, so we have resorted to tieing a string around the house to help them stay upright.
Our hope is that we can let the flowers go to seed and then harvest the seeds to roast. Jon eats sunflower seeds like crazy, especially when driving to keep himself awake. I hope that the birds/squirrels don’t get to them before we do!
So pretty! I’ve been wanting to do sunflowers myself but we have a major bird population.
