After the holiday dinners are over I only have one request. Can I have the carcass!
I acquired 4 turkey carcasses, combined it with all the vegetable “garbage” I’ve frozen throughout the year (onion skins, carrot peels, leaves off of the celery and potato skins) and made 13 quarts and 1 pint of broth, along with a big pot of homemade soup.
The treasure after 6 hours of boiling…
Skimmed Broth:
Don’t forget to ask for the leftover bones at your next holiday meal! It’s a great source of FREE food!!
You are truly a dedicated “saver”…I wish I were more that way! I try not to waste, but never thought of doing this!
Another idea…this might sound kind of “yucky”, but the chickens also like the carcass! They clean it to the bone in no time..cannibals!!
I give them beef and pork and they love it, but I still get a little nervous about feeding poultry to them. More my own issues than theirs though!
Home-made broth is definitely the way to go! I love that you had 4 turkey carcasses. We go to my mom’s best friend’s house for Thanksgiving dinner and she does this with the two turkeys she makes.
I used my 22 pound turkey carcass for the same thing. I got about 4 quarts of turkey stock (chunks of stuff included since I use real food). Tonight we did a venison roast with potatoes, onion, and celery. After the roast was done I took the meat out and used the leftover juice and I will have beef stock.
