We brought our cow and 2 steers to their new home yesterday. They will be living at my parents house due to our lack of pasture and we will be going up there to visit and feed/water them daily. Luckily my parents only live about 3 miles away! It’s exciting and nerve racking to own such a big animal. To top it off, as you can see in the video below she is not overly friendly! She’s been handled very little which is typical of beef cows, but we would still like to get her to be a bit friendlier. We’ve currently got all three cows tied in the barn so that they will get used to us being around them. They are still pretty wild and I’m still very nervous about walking in between them in the stall to get up by their heads. My dad is most comfortable, but he also has decades of experience and a whole lot more strength behind him. Jon is pretty comfortable with them too, especially considering he grew up and the suburbs (It still blows my mind how much this city boy wants to be a farmer
) It’s certainly a learning experience which will get much easier once they are used to us, I hope!

That’s so exciting that you’ve got your cow & two steers! I know exactly what you mean about being nervous around them. When I first started horseback riding, I was so nervous to go in the stall with them and back them out or even put their bridle on. I think it’s just experience but I’m sure you’ll do wonderfully with them!
Horses are even more intimidating then cows to me! The cows usually mean no harm, you might get hurt if you get in their way, but I feel like horses will go out of their way to get you if you cross them. As you can tell I have little horse experiance
Cattle are great, but if they aren’t used to people they can be dangerous because of fear. Maxine and MJ were both bottle babies, and I trust them completely. MJ is my gentle giant.
I would be pretty nervous around them too just because of their size.
Does your cow milk? Does it have little ones?
Nope! We only have polled herefords, a variety of beef cows. We’ll have babies next year. She’ll be old enough to breed in the spring.
Happy New Year, you two! Hope you had a wonderful holiday season, and hope we’ll see you blogging again soon, Amanda.
All the best for 2012!
