I love to share posts from other blogs that strike a chord in me. This post is one of those. People love to tell you just how hard farming is. We get that, it is VERY hard. After a while though, you just don’t want to hear it anymore. If you fall in love with farming you know what you’re in for. You know that your life will be hard, the work will be non-stop, the sacrifices will be great. You realize that raising kids into this life isn’t the norm. Their childhood will not be full of luxury but rather a greater understanding and compassion for the people who sustain our society. You can survive without your stock broker, you’ll never make it without food. Living a life near poverty isn’t the worst destiny if you are fulfilled and meeting your obligations. It’s consuming and it’s not for everyone, but it isn’t a bad life either. In fact I’d say it’s a pretty darn good life.

Small farmers need to be part of the food supplies future. I was just having a discussion about this with a friend. Ethical farming is so important! The masses have lost touch with where food comes from, and so many don’t care to find out. It’s sad. Eggs don’t just come from the store, they come from chickens, who have interesting lives, and are a wonder in themselves. Steaks come from cows, who, should have good lives before we sacrifice them to our stomachs, and damn it! We need to be thankful for those animals giving their lives to feed us!
No one knows this more than the people who live on farms and are working hand in hand with nature to grow food-be it for themselves, friends and family or for sale.
Farming is hard work, but, it is work that is so, so important. Any one who chooses to farm, and raises their kids understanding the circle of life and where food comes from, should be applauded, IMO.
Farming is hard work, that’s for sure! I grew up on a farm, and life was definitely different than my friends. Not nearly so different, however, as it is now for our kids as compared to their friends.
I grew up to appreciate how I was raised…learning the satisfaction of hard physical work, falling into bed feeling like I’d earned my sleep, and I could go on…
We just hope that our kids will someday have the same appreciation for their farm upbringing. Right now it might not be easy for them…we can’t go away as a family, it’s difficult for us (parents) to get to all their sports/music events…but as they mature, I hope they feel good about their upbringing and what they’ve learned!
Great post and great blog! Thanks for sharing. My husband and I dream of having a hobby farm. We wont’ be able to do it full time for quite some time but we’d love to raise our own food. It may not be the life everyone else dreams of but for us and what we want for our kids, it will be wonderful!
That is very inspirational!
At least my family has given up on me. Of course, they also enjoy the farm life. Most people don’t understand that farming is a way of life, not just a job.
